How to Win at Rock Paper Scissors: What Actually Works

Is rock paper scissors pure luck? Against a perfect random generator, yes. Against people, no, because people are bad at being random. That is your opening.

The perfect strategy from game theory

The game theory answer is simple: pick each sign with a probability of one third, truly at random. Then nobody can beat you in the long run. You will not do better than an even result either: on average you win a third of rounds, lose a third and tie a third.

The pattern: winners stay, losers shift

Researchers at Zhejiang University ran an experiment in 2014 with students who played hundreds of rounds in groups. The result: people who won tended to repeat their sign, while those who lost tended to move to the next sign in the order rock, paper, scissors. It is only a tendency, but you can use it.

Three practical tips

  1. After your opponent wins: they tend to stay. Pick what beats that sign.
  2. After you win: the loser tends to shift. If they lost with scissors, rock often comes next, so play paper.
  3. Stay unpredictable yourself: the moment you follow a pattern, you become readable. Break it on purpose now and then.

Why bluffing matters even more on a board

With hand signs, the last round is all the information you have. On the Rock Paper Reign board there is far more: which pieces never move, which ones retreat, which are already revealed? Our expert bot even counts which weapon you prefer in duels, which is exactly the weakness described here. Read more in the tactics guide.
