Rock Paper Scissors Rules Explained Simply
Rock paper scissors is one of the few games anyone can learn in a minute. Two people, one hand, three signs. Arguments still start the moment details come up: when exactly do you throw, and what counts on a tie? Here are the rules, short and clear.
The basic rules
Both players count in together and show one of three hand signs at the same moment:
- Rock: a closed fist
- Paper: a flat, open hand
- Scissors: index and middle finger spread apart
What beats what?
| Sign | beats | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Rock | Scissors | Rock blunts scissors |
| Scissors | Paper | Scissors cut paper |
| Paper | Rock | Paper wraps rock |
Each sign beats exactly one other and loses to exactly one other. None is stronger than the rest, which is what makes the game fair.
What happens on a tie?
If both players show the same sign, the round does not count and you throw again straight away until someone wins.
Counting in properly
Timing causes most arguments. Agree on a rhythm first, such as "rock, paper, scissors, shoot", and throw on the last word. A late throw loses the round or gets replayed. For decisions that matter, first to two wins works well, because one lucky round no longer settles everything.
Variants with more depth
Many groups add extra signs, but a single round stays mostly luck. Real depth only appears once knowledge and planning come in. That is the idea behind Rock Paper Reign: rock, paper and scissors become hidden pieces on a board, and you have to work out what your opponent carries before you attack. The how-to-play guide covers the details.
